Mirror Work

Going back and reflecting on your experiences and your actions is how to grow and change. Only when you identify something that was off can you start the process of moving forward and fixing it. As an educator, this is of the utmost importance. I am a white person who is mostly likely going to teach in a school where the majority of the student population is not white. I need to ensure that my classroom is a safe space for students whose expereinces in live are going to be rather different from mine. Just because I haven't lived it doens't mean I can't provide comfort. Our students cannot learn unless they feel safe, and to truly ensure their safety, it's important to reflect and make sure that you are combatting those internalized biases everyone builds upon since birth. It's not simple or easy work, but it's good work.
